If Only For a Day…

If life were to lend you to me for but a day
By dawn I'd wake with zest to learn your simple charms
Of several senses I would share my thoughts in passionate playing fields
With kisses hard and long, what dreams that morning yields
I would burn your image in my mind and
Memorize each line for conjuring at will
The crystal patterns of your eyes imaged in my own
I'd search your gaze for hints of truth about the love you've known
I would savor every syllable and drink your every movement
I would unite us with poetry and passion,
With blazing strength and care
An earnest student with firm but gentle arms
It would be a day of contradiction, redemption and of smiles
A day of clouds and long fresh grass, besotted with your wiles
If I were isolated here and set to useless tasks,
Still I would be thankful if only in that light I basked
I would invite you to lie with me to mock short time's duality
The plea would be to marry me in a place beyond eternity.
And nearing dawn again I'd let your feathered voice
Sing me to sleep, thankful for the day I had to keep.
